Reception of the First and Second Sophistic and Platonic philosophy in the Pseudo Clementine Literature.

The aim of this research is an analysis of the influences of Plato and the First and Second Sophistic in the Pseudo-Clementines. Until now, the study of philosophy in the Pseudo-Clementines has largely remained limited to the possible stoic and epicurean influence. Nonetheless the influence of Plato cannot be underestimated, nor that of his contemporaries: the sophists. Similarities with the platonic dialogues and sophistic works as Gorgias’ Helena need to be examined more closely. This stands in combination with a narrative and rhetorical approach of this work. How is the work constructed, where can we notice the influence of Plato or the Sophists and how does that fit in the whole construction? But the context (3rd -4th century) may not be lost out of sight. This context is much debated, so caution with probable notions of anti-Paulinism, the Neoplatonic Iamblichus and his Theurgy, Elcesaitic influences, etc. is necessary. In this respect, the question of the Jewish, Christian, pagan identities will be treated in this literary corpus. To conclude, it wants to achieve a greater understanding of this literary corpus making use of a combination of methodologies from the fields of philosophy, religious studies and philology. By combining these fields of research, it wants to shed a fundamentelly new light on this corpus.

God and Darwin in the Low Countries: Intelligent Design Creationism in Flanders and the Netherlands.

Creationism is mostly regarded as a typically North-American phenomenon, and so it has been for a long time. But with Intelligent Design, creationism goes European. No longer explicitly mentioning God in their publications and selling their message in scientific formats, ID-adepts are able to address a much wider, more ‘skeptical’ audience. Intelligent Design is presented as a viable alternative to Darwinism, which they call a theory in decline. Biochemical studies on intracellular level point toward the edge of evolution, making room for design as the most appropriate explanation. Only the blind still hold on to the Darwinian dogma…

In the Low Countries (in Flanders, but especially in the Netherlands) we find indications that Intelligent Design Creationism (IDC) is on the rise. Recent inquiries suggest that almost one out of four people in the Low Countries is not insensible towards ideas that could easily merge with IDC. The media pay more attention than ever to topics regarding creationism and some Christian politicians have shown sympathy with IDC. In the Netherlands, as many as three books have been published covering IDC, with some of the authors being highly regarded scientists. While some people might feel that IDC is not an issue in this region, we tend to disagree.

That is the reason why we decided to take a closer look at IDC in the Low Countries. Always keeping a firm eye on the United States, we will try to understand and explain IDC in Flanders and the Netherlands, each within its own cultural, historical, philosophical and religious context. In dissecting the arguments IDC adepts use, we will make clear that only their own religion, and not science, is their concern. Therefore, to counteract IDC, we not only should promote a better understanding of evolution theory, but also of science itself.

Both Max Scheler and Karol Wojtyla have put the concept of moral responsibility and its anthropological foundations central in their writings. They have connected, in an utmost original and interesting way, the subject of man’s moral responsibility with that of human autonomy and creativity. The latter manifests itself in the fact that the work of both philosophers can be described as a “Philosophie der Tat.”

Although the focal point of my research concerns Scheler and Wojtyla, I also do research on Polish and Russian philosophy. Regarding Polish philosophy, my research is especially concerned with the influence of the Polish Socinians (a reformational movement) on the enlightened ideals of toleration and rationality. Regarding Russian philosophy, I am chiefly interested in Dostoevsky, the philosophical issues related to the problem of oblomovism and, last bot not least, Nikolay Berdyaev. As Berdyaev’s thought is substantially akin to that of Scheler and Wojtyla, I am once more concerned with the place and value of a Philosophie der Tat in (the history of) our ethical reflection.

I attempt to test out an encompassing moral philosophical outlook on human autonomy and responsibility, mainly based on the insights of the philosophers I have mentioned by name, but not exclusively though, by evaluating how the insights of Scheler and Wojtyla can help in elaborating a philosophical foundation for a global ethics. As such, their thought must be interpreted as a convinced critique on moral indifference and passivity.

Christianity, the Oriental Religions and the Mystery Cults in the thought of Franz Cumont, and his work within the context of Liberal Theology and Modernism (Alfred Loisy)

Franz Cumont is still considered one of the most important 20th century historians of religion. His importance in the field of history of religion can clearly be deduced from his numerous publications, many reviews and the vivid correspondence he carried on with prominent German, French and Italian contemporary academics. Cumont examined the pagan mystery religions and his religions orientales, a term he coined, in a time when there was much discussion about their alleged connection to the origins of Christianity. Within the Catholic Church, a historical survey of Christianity’s roots, as brought up by progressive exegetes, was even a significant cause of the modernist crisis. Cumont himself remained rather reticent about the issue as he mentioned Christianity only incidemment. However, his correspondence with modernists like Alfred Loisy indicates that Cumont was well informed about the whole crise de l’origine and kept up with the related debates. Hence our first intention is to trace back his opinion about the origin and evolution of Christianity: what were his views on the relation between early Christianity and the eastern religions and mystery cults? Did he, too, conceptualize it as a mystery cult? Secondly, we aim to thoroughly define the position he took in the above-mentioned disputes as well as in the modernist crisis. In order to do so, we will both study his publications and focus on the stands he took up in the less known published reviews on the one hand and the private context of his letters on the other hand.

Sacred fiction. A narratological-rhetorical analysis of novelistic topicality and generic specificity in late-antique hagiography

The subject of this research is a voluminous corpus of Greek and Latin fictional texts, which has not been elaborately examined from a literary point of view: the late antique Acta Martyrum and Passiones. These texts are dated between the 4th untill 6th centuries and can be characterized as narrative literature, since they worked out the lawsuit and the (attempts at) execution of the martyrs into real stories. We intend a literary-technical analysis of these texts, against the background of the fictional pagan novels, both Latin (Apuleius, Petronius) and Greek (Chariton, Xenophon, Achilles Tatius, Longus and Heliodorus), because these novels consolidated some novelistic themes and topoi, which are used abundantly in our corpus. We want to analyze the construction of such novelistic topoi in two fields that are of interest with regard to the hagiographee, namely the concept of characterization and the erotic themes. To what extent is, in these two fields, the formal construction of the narrative in the Acta Martyrum and Passiones similar to the one we find in the novel? Is our corpus homogeneous in regard to the narrative techniques that are used in these fields or do we notice an evolution, as the actual threat of the pagans diminishes? The textual analysis, that could provide us with an answer tot these questions, will be based on two complementary models of literary theory: on the one hand, we will use a model that already proved its use in the study of ancient fiction, the structuralistic narratology, and on the other the main literary theory of lat antiquity, ancient rhetoric.

Biblical stylisation in Late Antique Acta Martyrum & Passiones

This research studies the hitherto underexamined corpus of Latin and Greek martyr acts and passions of the fourth to the sixth centuries. Dating to the post-Constantine period, these mainly anonymous texts are often considered as fictitious and historically unreliable and therefore not as useful sources. Nevertheless they are a treasury of information about contemporary religious attitudes. Given the narrative quality of these Acta & Passiones, the particular focus of this research is to explore their literary influences, in the concrete the influence of the Bible. A first goal is to identify biblical quotes, allusions, similar plot structures and the like. A second goal is to interpret the function of this biblical intertextuality in reference to developing Christian asceticism and the then conflicts (with pagans, Jews or heretics). Altogether we will investigate the interrelationship of the Bible, the pre-Constantine Christian martyrs, and their post-Constantine literary stylisation, with a view to elucidating the working of the scriptural repertory within this particular literary corpus.

Zin of onzin.

To Play or Not to Play. Wordplay in the Hebrew Bible (Genesis)

Since the Hebrew Bible text was written down, people have shown interest in its exact wording. However, an academic study in which the language choices would be explained outside a religious-mystical framework has been non-existent for a long time. With I. Casanowitzc's work on paronomasia at the end of the nineteenth century more and more notices of wordplay started to occur in academic articles, often in footnotes. More recently scholars such as G. Rendsburg, S. Noegel and M. Garsiel have made the unusual renderings as one of their main research topics. The current research project stands in the latter tradition, focusing on wordplay in the Hebrew Bible in the book Genesis, and in particular on devices of a paronomastic or polysemous nature. The project is highly text based and draws on literary criticism, ancient and late ancient exegesis (Greco-Roman and rabbinic), and previous analyses of Genesis from different angles (narratological, historical-critical, theological, sociological ...). Through the use of old translations, and comparative Semitics and literature, it aims to shed light on the role and use of wordplay in Genesis and in extension in the Hebrew Bible.

Defeating Doom with History: Syriac historiography of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries

This research project focuses on the rich Syriac Christian historiographical tradition and more specifically on the peak of that tradition: the Syriac Renaissance of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. During this period, there is a renewed interest among the Syrian Orthodox community in their own language and the growing optimism that Syriac was equally capable in rendering scientific literature as Arabic. At that time, three monumental Syriac historiographical works were written: the Chronicle of Michael the Syrian (1116-1199), the Anonymous Chronicle to 1234 and the Chronicon Syriacum and Chronicon Ecclesiasticum of Gregory Abu 'l-Faraj Bar ‛Ebroyo (1226-1286).

It is the goal of this research project to prepare a first thorough analysis of this Anonymous Chronicle to 1234, which has been somewhat neglected up to this point. Passages from this work have been cited in various studies, regarding the Cave of Treasures, the Book of Jubilees, or the now-lost ninth-century Chronicle of Dionysius of Tell-Mahre, a common source of Michael's and the Anonymous Chronicler's. However, the Anonymous Chronicle to 1234 has never been studied in its entirety. A study of this work, its sources and its relation to the other Syriac historiographical achievements of this period will provide new insights into the structure of this anonymous chronicle and the methodology and intentions of its author.
